Meanwhile, keeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the series. England are focused on building their team for the future and with that in mind, Moeen Ali and Bairstow have been left out of the squad. Moeen has since retired from international cricket and Bairstow is looking to return.

Apart from Moeen and Bairstow, several other notable cricketers have been ruled out of the Australia series. Chris Woakes has been ruled out for selection, while Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood have been ruled out with hamstring and elbow injuries respectively.

This will be Brook’s first time leading the national team. In 2018, he captained the England U-19 team and in 2022, he played four T20 Blast matches for Yorkshire. He was recently appointed captain of the Northern Superchargers, who won five of their six matches under his leadership but narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stages. He was also named as Ollie Pope’s replacement for the recent Test series against Sri Lanka when Ben Stokes was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
